7 marketing lessons I’ve learned this week

So far this week I’ve learned that:

  1. Most people outside the Internet marketing arena don’t understand what web designers/developers do.
  2. My wife, one of the most intelligent people I know, has no idea what I do for a living. She tells people “he makes websites look nice”.
  3. 8 of the 10 people I’ve asked (in real life) about the Internet don’t know what a web browser is even though they use one every day.
  4. The phrase ‘inbound marketing’ draws a blank expression from experienced business people almost every time I mention it.
  5. Contrary to popular belief, a lot of people still use the Yellow Pages to research solutions to their problems.
  6. Charging subscribers to read the news online IS a viable business model, because most people are too lazy/don’t know how to search for free, high quality online news. And it looks cool on their iPad.
  7. Everyone else in the world has New Twitter except me (not a marketing lesson, or a lesson per se, but it’s annoying me).

Got anything worth adding to the list?

So true. So misunderstood. My hair stylist asked me what I do, and when I told her, she replied, “Why would someone need that?” Told her that I could cut my own hair, but I’m smarter than that!

    hehe, great response Joanna.

Dude, number one is soo true. It seems like everytime someone asks me what I do and I mention that I do web design, they are like “Oh…..that’s nice” and look at me with an awkward tilted head.

My biggest marketing lesson learned the past month: people are more uninformed about web design than I believe them to be.

I don’t have New Twitter yet. Keep getting the “something’s wrong” page. Just didn’t want you to feel lonely, Dave.

Update: I don’t know what all the fuss was about. I still don’t use Twitter in the browser…
